3.         VA Space Consortium Workshops:

Virginia Space Grant Consortium is sponsoring a webinar series titled, Science and Technology in our Changing World. 

This two-part series will investigate how a changing world has impacted our past, present, and future. Understanding the origins of our world, from the big bang to the present day, will help us predict the future and analyze and solve problems. The next great science and technology developments are happening now and increasing at a rapid pace. Where are you in this future? 

Each webinar will feature conversations with leading scientists who will talk about the science and technology changing our world. They will also share information about their educational and career paths. Students can pose questions to the presenters. October 28, 2020 -- OUR INTERCONNECTED EARTH: CLIMATE CHANGE, RECENT EVENTS, AND LOCAL IMPACTS

Dr. Patrick Taylor, Research Scientist, NASA Langley Research Center, will use NASA observations to demonstrate the interconnected nature of our climate, discuss basic concepts of climate change, and put current events into the context of climate change. Registration open now. 

November 4, 2020 --  YOUR CONNECTION TO THE COSMOS: THE ORIGINS OF YOUR ATOMS

Dr. Ed Murphy, Department of Astronomy, University of Virginia, will trace the history of our atoms, and those in the world around us, from the Big Bang to the present day.

4.        National Society of Black Engineers - Zoom Discussion - Nov 6 (6:00 - 7:30pm)

The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Chapter at Hampton University will be hosting a Zoom discussion on transfer and opportunities in STEM at Hampton University.  The event will be held on Friday, November 6 from 6 - 7:30 PM. The flyer for this event is attached.

5.      Summer 2021 Research Opportunity in Chemistry - Paid Stipends:

Summer Research Opportunity in Chemistry for Community College Students ***

Old Dominion University’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is pleased to announce its Summer 2021 Research Experiences for Undergraduate program for community college students interested in a career in chemistry or a related field. 

The 10-week (May 24 – Jul 30, 2021) program will give participants the opportunity to contribute to a real-world research project and gain valuable skills for transfer to a 4-year major and a future STEM career.  You may even see your work published in a scientific journal!

We are seeking applicants enrolled in a community college that fit the following qualifications: 

- strong interest in a career in chemistry or a related STEM field  

- completion of science-majors’ college chemistry lecture and lab by Spring 2021 

- US citizen or permanent resident 

Women, minorities, first generation college students and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to applicants who are not planning to pursue an MD. 

Participants receive a generous stipend ($5000), on-campus housing, and travel assistance to and from the site if outside the Hampton Roads area.
