Course Policies

Attendance Policy:

This is a NOVA Online (NOL) course and we do not "meet" in Zoom rooms at regularly scheduled times.

You are expected to check in to the Canvas course site on a daily basis, read any newly-posted announcement, and complete assignments in a timely manner.

How to keep from getting lost in the course:

To help you, the instructor posts announcements at the start of each week. Each announcement includes a preview of the work and suggestions for completing the assignments. Read the weekly announcement first and then look at the Canvas module directions.

Grading:

HIS 101 is a NOVA Online (NOL) course. Professor Rothenhoefer facilitates your section of this course. He scores your work using the directions and instructions for the specific assignment. If you want to score well on an assignment, read the directions and use them as a check list for your work, because Professor Rothenhoefer uses them as the rubric for scoring.

Late Work Policy:

  • There are specific assignment deadlines in this course, and these are listed on the course schedule. You may submit any of the course required assignments late, but the maximum point value will then be reduced by one-half.
  • You may not take a required midterm or final exam late.
  • Late discussion posts are not allowed, with the exception of the initial introduction post. Because the forums serve as our virtual "in class discussion", the posts should be submitted when due. After the due date, students have moved on and any posts submitted late are useless for our discussion purposes. No credit is given for late discussion posts, and late discussion posts do not fulfill the four options.
  • You may not submit a late group project.

Contacting the Professor:

Use the Canvas Inbox message system instead of emailing. Do this even if the syllabus instructions tell you to "email the instructor". We will keep all communications on the course site.

Memorandum of Accommodation:

If you have a Memorandum of Accommodation (MOL) from your counselor, forward it to your instructor at the start of the course.

Grading Turnaround Time:

All completed assignments will be graded no later than seven days from the submission date, and sooner when possible.

Incomplete Policy:

The incomplete grade is used for verifiable unavoidable reasons. If you have made significant progress in your course, your end date is near, and you have reasons that can be documented as unavoidable, you may request a grade of Incomplete. To request a grade of Incomplete for this course, you must:

  • Have satisfactorily completed 60 percent or more of the assignments (per VCCS policy)
  • Explain your extenuating circumstances in writing
  • Provide a plan for completing the remaining assignments in writing (all work must be completed by the end of the subsequent semester)
  • The time you have to complete the course must be agreed upon with your instructor, but will be no more than one additional semester
