Course Policies

Attendance Policy:

For purposes of SACSCOC accreditation, “distance education is a formal educational process in which the majority of the instruction (interaction between students and instructors and among students) in a course occurs when students and instructors are not in the same place.” VET 217-01YL class meets 100% online (online classes).

NOVA recognizes that successful learning requires good communication between students and instructors; therefore, in most cases, regular classroom attendance, or regular participation in the case of a nontraditional course format, is essential.

It is the student’s responsibility to inform his/her instructor prior to an absence from class. Students are responsible for making up all coursework missed during an absence.

4.1. Administrative Deletion

If a student does not attend at least one class meeting or participate in an online learning class by the “last day to drop with a tuition refund” (census date), his/her class registration will be administratively deleted. This means that there will be no record of the class or any letter grade on the student’s transcript. Furthermore, the student’s class load will be reduced by the course credits, and this may affect his/her full-time or part-time student status. Tuition will not be refunded.

4.2. Accommodation for Religious Observances

Northern Virginia Community College recognizes the rich and diverse religious backgrounds of its students and is committed to providing them access to education without undue hardship. Since religious observances do not always conform to academic holidays, fair, reasonable, and appropriate accommodations to students wishing to observe religious holidays are encouraged, provided that students notify their instructors well in advance of schedule conflicts. When tests or assessments fall on religious holidays, students should contact their instructors as soon as possible. Students are responsible for all work missed.

4.3. Absences Due to Illness

Students should notify their instructors in advance if possible when they will miss classes due to illness, and students should make arrangements to make up any missed work.

Grading Turnaround Time:

All completed assignments will be graded no later than seven days after the due date, and sooner when possible.

Grading will occur during the weekdays (Monday - Friday) between the hours of 8:00am-4:00pm. Students will be notified if this policy changes.

The majority of the assignments for this course will be submitted by posting in the "discussion forums" or "dropboxes." It is strongly recommended that you draft (and save) all assignments in Microsoft Word (or other word processing program) and then copy and paste the information into discussion forum postings. That way you will have a copy saved on your computer should anything go wrong.

Due dates for each module are published on the course calendar. Work turned in by 11:59 PM Eastern Standard Time on the due date, as evidenced by the date stamp given on the discussion board or dropbox, will be considered on time and will receive full credit. Prompt submission of assignments for assessment allows the instructor to provide guidance and timely feedback.

Assignments and discussion forum postings and replies submitted after the due date will receive a 10% grade deduction each day it is late. In other words, assignments which would have been rated A or Exemplary will be graded as B, or instead of 100%, the grade will be 90%. Work submitted after five days past the original due date will not be accepted and will receive a zero.

Assignment grades will be posted in the grade book within 5 days after the assignment due date. If a grade is not posted, then the assignment was missing in the appropriate dropbox folder.

Late Work Policy:

Assignments and discussion forum postings and replies submitted after the due date will receive a 10% grade deduction each day it is late. In other words, assignments which would have been rated A or Exemplary will be graded as B, or instead of 100%, the grade will be 90%. Work submitted after five days past the original due date will not be accepted and will receive a zero.

Midterm and final assessments submitted after the due date will NOT receive a grade, unless an approved/excused absence was approved by the instructor and/or higher authority.

Assignment grades will be posted in the grade book within 5 days after the assignment due date. If a grade is not posted, then the assignment was missing in the appropriate dropbox folder.
